DANCER: Ying Xin, the Martha Graham Dance Company
What career would you choose if you could not be a dancer? YX: I would become a dance teacher, if I could not be a dancer. What is your worst fear (professionally or personally)? YX: Hah, I think every dancer has the same kind of nightmare, which is having forgotten dance steps on stage, or tripping and falling right in front of an audience! Which person (dead or alive) would you most want to dance with if you could? YX: I wish I could have met Martha Graham before she died. But the person I most want to dance with is Mikhail Baryshnikov. If a child told you they wanted to be a dancer, what would your advice be? YX: It is a really hard life, but with great joy. You will not regret becoming a dancer, but you definitely will regret that you never tried to be one if you love to dance. If you could be an animal, which one would you choose and why? YX: I will say a cat. Just love the way they move. What is your greatest indulgence? YX: Hanging out with beautiful dancers from the company with great food and wine. What 3 items do you always have in your bag with you? YX: My prayer beads, the jade Buddha (a gift from my mom), and gum. What is your idea of perfect happiness? YX: Having an amazing massage after rehearsal. Who would you like most to have a coffee with (could be dead or alive)? YX: Salvador Dali. What is your favorite city to tour to and why? YX: Ithaca,Greece. We had a great time last summer when we were touring there. They have the most beautiful water and sky and a very heart warming audience. The good news is we are going back again this year!
